History of Dunedin's Jewish community

For over thirty years the Chabad Lubavitch movement has had emissaries visit the Otago region from time to time.

Dunedin is the largest city in Otago and is the home to a few hundred Jews as well as The University of Otago. Tens of thousands of Jewish tourists also visit the Otago region annually.

After a short visit Rabbi Shmuel Kopel saw a major void in the necessary Jewish religious and cultural services in the region. Soon after he moved to Dunedin together with his wife Henna and their three children.

The purpose of Chabad of Otago is to provide all Jewish social, cultural and educational services to the people who reside or pass through Otago.

If you reside in the Otago region or are planing a visit please contact us about more information
